High Stakes Poker Season 3 Episode 1

By Glenn Cole | January 17, 2007

The show almost didn’t have time to start before the latest World Series Of Poker main event winner; Jamie Gold tried to bluff Doyle Brunson out of a pot. Too bad Brunson had the ultimate nuts.

The first episode, this first hours of High Stakes Poker includes some of the better known poker players, and some new comers:
Seat 1: Mike Matusow
Seat 2: Jamie Gold
Seat 3: Daniel Alaei
Seat 4: Shahram “Shawn” Sheikhan
Seat 5: Victor Ramdin
Seat 6: Daniel Negreanu
Seat 7: William Chen
Seat 8: Doyle Brunson

For the record, it is still AJ Benza and Gabe Kaplan in the booth, and still Kaplan is one of the best commentators out there. Same buy in ($100.000 minimum) and re buy ($50.000 minimum) as in the last seasons. This time, the casino they are playing in is South Point Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas.

You see in Seat 5 and 7 are two players who make their entrance in High Stakes Poker, Victor Ramdin and William Chen. I haven’t seen so much play of these two players. I saw Ramdin before in Professional Poker Tour Season 1, and made a rather weak impression to me there. Chen won two World Series Of Poker bracelets this year, and has made a name of himself in the poker circuit. And what do you know; Gold caught with his hands in the cookie jar in the first hand in Season 3, trying to bluff the grandfather of Poker, Doyle Brunson. Too bad he is holding the ultimate nuts. First hand and Gold already lost a third of his buy in of $100.000. Well, let’s see if he gets luckier later on…

On the record, every table with Matusow is just hilarious; he seems to have a “hate/love-relationship” with almost everyone at the table. And he still talking about his heart and that no one else has it. The thing with Matusow, is that he can play really awesome poker for a while, then after some hours of playing he gets his famous “blow ups”. Chen is an interesting player. He waits for the right situation, and then plays very aggressive, I like his style. And another thing, he not at all cocky about his play like some of the other, in fact he is bad mouthing himself and his own play. Respect to a poker player with self distance.

On the other hand, the other new player at High Stakes Poker, Ramdin is playing many hands kind of weird in my opinion. I think the opponents and the cameras and everything else around it makes it too hard for Ramdin too play good poker.

In this episode Matusow play very aggressive and sometimes a bit reckless, but it works for now. I am just waiting for someone to flop a monster against him and rob him of all his money. And after the hand, listening to how unlucky he is etc. But for now, he gets the pots and telling everyone that “you got to have heart” to play like him… One thing you have to give Gold is that his play is loosing up the whole table, just because he is limps in every freaking pot.
