High Stakes Poker Season 3 Episode 9

By Glenn Cole | March 13, 2007

This new day of High Stakes Poker is interesting in many different of ways. Two new comers are up against each other in a really big pot for example, (Illya Trincher and Dan Harmetz). And you will see two different types of play with 72 off suit…

This week’s episode is a new day for the participants, and you will see a lot of new faces, like Illya Trincher and Dan Shak.
Seat 1: Daniel Negreanu
Seat 2: Illya Trincher
Seat 3: Dan Harmetz
Seat 4: Antonio Esfandiari
Seat 5: Phil Laak
Seat 6: Chris Ferguson
Seat 7: Mike Matusow
Seat 8: Dan Shak

In the first hand, one of the new players at the table Dan Shak is up against Matusow who raised pre flop just to see how tight the table would be today. The hand ends up on the river, when Shak bluffs (with the best hand) and takes the pot.

Laak and Esfandiari are old friends, and like to play against each other apparently. One of the first hand Laak gets the nut flush draw and check raises his buddy who has top pair. But Laak says that he picked the wrong chips, and he really meant to just call, but no one believes him and Esfandiari folds.

Next hand you will see in this episode is awesome in all sorts of ways; it’s a battle between two new comers; Illya Trincher and Dan Harmetz. And both of them flopped two monster hands/draws. Illya had a flush draw and Harmetz was looking down on top pair top kicker and the nut flush draw. But both of them just check the hand, and letting Esfandiari bet out. After that Shak is heating up the pot, with a $30.000 raise and shortly after Illya pronounces all in. With the pot size of almost $210.000 they both decide to run the turn and river twice. Shak’s top pair holds up both times, and wins a large pot against the other new comer Illya Trincher. But I don’t mind Trincher’s move in this situation, if Shak didn’t have the nut flush draw he must lay down his hand. Now Trincher was up against almost the worst hand possible, when the flush draw was bad for him.

I’ve missed Matusow in some episodes now; I love his constant blabbering about nothing and everything. I really don’t understand what he is getting everything from, and if he sounds as much in his real life, but I think he does… There is a cute conversation between the players about when Matusow met the actor Ben Affleck at the club one night, well listen for your self. Well, players like Matusow are great for the poker community and good for High Stakes Poker, with his constantly talking and the fact that he plays every freaking hand.

In this episode Ferguson is sitting just next to Matusow, and he is almost the opposite of Matusow; never says a word, and just play topnotch starting hands. I want to add he does it well, but maybe it isn’t as much fun to see as Mike Matusow.

They are talking about that everyone will give the player who will have the guts to make a play with 72 off suit $1.000 each. And just as everyone is talking about this, Esfandiari gets 72 off suit and raises $2.000 and gets one caller. But he will lead out after the flop and will take the pot but he will not show the hand. The hand directly after this, Matusow picks up the same hand and raises to $12.000 pre flop and gets the pot. But as you would understand, Matusow will show everyone the hand. Funny too see the difference between the players. In my opinion Esfandiari plays for himself and to give credits to himself without everyone knowing. Matusow likes to show every at the table what he is made of and is pleased to let everyone know what he can do with a junk hand as 72 off suit.
